The city
Decatur, Illinois, is the Macon County seat, founded in 1829 on the Sangamon River. It counted 70,522 residents in 2020 and is home to Millikin University and Richland Community College (Wikipedia: Decatur, Illinois). Not to be confused with the cities of the same name in other states, it is the Decatur where Lincoln's family first settled in Illinois.
Neighborhood patterns
- Near downtown and Millikin: older homes with full basements, galvanized supply pipe, cast-iron stacks and clay sewers under mature trees. See the older homes guide.
- Mid-century neighborhoods: ranches with basements or crawlspaces, many with original water lines now reaching the end of their life.
- Near the lake: a mix of older lake homes and newer construction.
Water and lead lines
City water comes largely from Lake Decatur, a 2,800-acre reservoir on the Sangamon built in 1920–22 (Wikipedia: Lake Decatur). The City publishes water, sewer and permit information (City of Decatur, Illinois (water, sewer and permits)). Older homes may have lead service lines, which Illinois law requires water systems to inventory and replace (Illinois EPA, lead service line information).
Common calls
Floor-drain backups in older basements, roots in clay sewers, sump pumps working hard after storms, and frozen kitchen lines on outside walls in January.
Before you request an estimate
Note your neighborhood and roughly when the house was built, whether the basement is finished, and whether you know the material of your water service line. Photos of the water heater label, the sump pit and the main shut-off help a plumber plan the visit.
