Toilets, Faucets and Fixtures in Decatur

Running toilets, dripping faucets and tired shower valves are small problems that waste water and get worse. Here is how fixture work is usually handled in Decatur-area homes.

  • Toilets
  • Faucets and sinks
  • Hose bibs and laundry tubs

The short version

Many fixture problems are worn parts: flappers, fill valves, cartridges and washers. Replacement makes sense when the fixture is old, cracked or inefficient.

  • Typical asks: running toilets, rocking toilets, dripping faucets, low shower pressure
  • Ask about: shut-off valves, model, efficiency

Toilets

Running

A toilet that runs or refills on its own usually has a worn flapper or a failing fill valve. A few drops of food coloring in the tank show a silent leak. The EPA lists running toilets among the most common household leaks (U.S. EPA WaterSense, Fix a Leak Week).

Rocking or leaking at the base

A toilet that rocks can break the wax seal and leak onto the floor, or through the ceiling below. On older floors, the flange may be corroded or the subfloor soft. Fixing the cause matters more than adding shims.

Replacing

Measure the rough-in from the wall to the floor bolts; most are 12 inches, but older homes vary. WaterSense-labeled toilets use less water and are tested for performance (U.S. EPA WaterSense).

Faucets and sinks

Dripping faucets usually need a new cartridge or washer. Low flow is often a clogged aerator, especially with hard water. When replacing, count the holes and measure their spacing, and check the shut-off valves under the sink; old multi-turn valves often leak once disturbed and are commonly replaced at the same time.

Showers and tubs

Shower valves wear and drip, and older two-handle valves may not balance pressure. A pressure-balancing valve keeps temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet. Replacing a valve may involve opening the wall behind the shower.

Laundry tubs and standpipes

Basement laundry tubs crack and their faucets drip. Washer hoses should be checked for bulges and replaced periodically; braided steel hoses are common upgrades.

Hose bibs

Standard outdoor faucets freeze and split in Central Illinois winters. A frost-free hose bib closes inside the warm wall. Disconnect hoses before the first hard freeze. See frozen pipe repair.

Accessibility upgrades

Comfort-height toilets, lever-handle faucets, handheld shower heads and grab-bar blocking during a remodel make bathrooms easier to use as households change. A curbless shower needs a drain plan worked out early, since it affects the floor framing.

Code

Fixture work follows the Illinois plumbing code administered by the Department of Public Health (Illinois Department of Public Health, Plumbing Program).

Asked and answered

Toilets, Faucets & Fixtures: what people ask

  1. Why does my toilet keep running?

Usually a worn flapper or fill valve.

  2. Why does my toilet rock?

A loose flange or failed wax ring. It should be fixed before it leaks.

  3. Why is my faucet flow low?

Often a clogged aerator, especially with hard water.

  4. What is a frost-free hose bib?

An outdoor faucet that shuts off inside the warm wall so it does not freeze.

  5. Should I replace shut-off valves with a new faucet?

Old valves often leak once disturbed, so they are commonly replaced together.
