Water Heater Repair and Replacement in Decatur

Most Decatur water heaters live in a basement or utility room, work hardest in winter when incoming water is coldest, and face mineral buildup from hard water. Here is what goes into repair or replacement.

  • Tank and tankless
  • Gas and electric
  • Venting and code items

The short version

Age, leaks and lack of hot water decide repair versus replacement. A replacement brings venting, expansion tank and relief valve discharge up to code.

  • Typical asks: no hot water, leaking tanks, rumbling, running out fast
  • Ask about: size, fuel, venting, code items

Repair or replace?

A failed thermocouple, igniter, thermostat or heating element can often be repaired. A leaking tank cannot; once the tank itself leaks, replacement is the fix. Age matters too: the label shows the manufacture date, and many tanks are replaced somewhere past ten years.

Signs of trouble

  • Water around the base or rust at the bottom seam.
  • Rumbling or popping, usually sediment.
  • Hot water running out faster than it used to.
  • Rusty hot water.
  • Pilot outages on a gas unit.

Winter and sizing

In a Central Illinois winter, water enters the house much colder than in summer, so the heater has more work to do. A tank that keeps up in July may run short in January. Sizing should consider household size, peak use and the coldest incoming water.

Hard water and sediment

Minerals in the water settle in the tank as sediment. Flushing a few gallons from the drain valve periodically helps, and a softener reduces it. See water softeners.

Gas, electric and tankless

  • Gas tanks recover quickly and are common in basements with a chimney or vent.
  • Electric tanks need no venting but recover more slowly.
  • Power-vent units vent through the wall when the chimney cannot be used.
  • Tankless units heat on demand; they need adequate gas supply and venting, and descaling in hard water.

Venting and old chimneys

In many older Decatur homes, the water heater shares a masonry chimney with the furnace. When a high-efficiency furnace is installed and vents out the side wall, the water heater may be left alone in an oversized, cold chimney that vents poorly. A liner or a different venting approach may be needed. Ask how venting is handled.

Code items

A replacement usually includes a temperature and pressure relief valve with a discharge pipe routed to a safe spot, an expansion tank where the water system is closed, proper venting and gas connections. Illinois plumbing code is administered by the Department of Public Health (Illinois Department of Public Health, Plumbing Program); local permits go through the City of Decatur (City of Decatur, Illinois (water, sewer and permits)) or your village.

Efficiency

Insulating the first few feet of hot water pipe and setting the thermostat to a moderate temperature cut standby losses. Efficient fixtures reduce hot water demand (U.S. EPA WaterSense).

Asked and answered

Water Heater Repair & Replacement: what people ask

  1. How long does a water heater last?

Many tanks are replaced somewhere past ten years. Hard water and sediment shorten life.

  2. Why does my water heater rumble?

Sediment at the bottom of the tank.

  3. Why do I run out of hot water in winter?

Colder incoming water takes more energy to heat, so the same tank delivers less.

  4. Is a leaking tank repairable?

No. A leak in the tank itself means replacement.

  5. Do I need an expansion tank?

Often, when the water system is closed by a check valve or pressure reducer. It is a common code item.

  6. Why does my water heater vent need attention after a new furnace?

The old chimney may be too large for the water heater alone, causing poor venting.
